    About Us

Ibn Khaldon Centre for Humanities and Social Sciences is a Research Centre established in May 2018 by Qatar University. Its vision is to play a pioneering role in the Arab and Islamic world towards reforming the theoretical orientations of the Social Sciences and Humanities, with a view to becoming the sought platform and intellectual space for researchers and scientific initiatives in the region and beyond. Its seeks to bridge the gap between Islamic and Social Sciences, among the Social Sciences themselves, and between theoretical research and the actual needs of Muslim and Arab societies, and the global intellectual community. Most of the Center’s projects are carried out in collaboration with leading institutions and researchers locally, regionally and internationally who share our intellectual concerns.

    Scope of Work

The Centre’s research agenda spans four substantive areas of importance including:

    1. The Social Sciences, These are viewed holistically as encompassing the sectors of politics, economics, sociology, law, and Islamic Studies. This division is concerned with the scientific study of human societies with focus on the phenomena arising from social relationships and interactions of individuals and the interactions between societies.

    2. The Humanities, which includes Linguistics, Philosophy, History, Psychology, and Education. The focus here is on the study of how people process and document the human experience itself. These disciplines focus on the human being him/herself, in contrast to social sciences that address the phenomena arising from interactions between members of society or with other societies.

    3. Area Studies encompasses four main regions prioritized due to their significance to Qatar and its surroundings: studies of Western nations, Russian Studies, Iranian Studies, and Turkish Studies.

    4. Security and Strategic Studies, which is concerned with military, security and strategic studies. The focus here is to study and analyze current or expected events and issues at the local, regional and international levels, which have repercussions on security at its various levels; locally, regionally and internationally. It also aims to provide in-depth analysis and forward-looking research on the developments of the security situation.
