Janan

    JANAN Research Vessel

Janan is an honorable gift from HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. With the vessel, all financial, scientific and research facilities are harnessed to ensure a sustainable marine environment.

The research vessel Janan marked the advent of a new era of scientific research through attracting prominent scholars from Qatar and other countries to conduct research and studies related to the Qatari marine and territorial waters of Arab Gulf States and their natural resources. Janan also avails its capabilities and advanced laboratories to train students and future scientists, who will be assets for the future and sources of pride for Qatar and its people. Janan is a dream comes true for Qatari researchers with its modern equipment and research laboratories in the fields of marine and oceanic sciences. Janan has also helped boosting research collaboration with Gulf States and neighboring regions such as the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea.

Janan was built by one of Spain's most prestigious shipyards, Freire, with extensive experience in building research vessels.

    • Janan is one of the most sophisticated and advanced research vessels in the field of marine sciences in the Arabian Gulf and the Middle East
    • The vessel can sail in the waters of the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, the Red Sea, and the Arabian Gulf
    • It can sail on a non-stop journey of approximately 4500 kms by using an electrical energy “hybrid” system without relying on main engines
    • Janan can be stabilized during sample collection process by using the Dynamic Positioning System
    • The vessel has a water desalination plant which produces 10,000 liter in 24 hours
    • It contains a sewage treatment unit which is environment friendly
    • Janan can produce a half-ton of flake ice daily
    • The vessel can conduct hydrographic surveys for earthquake in the seabed as well as basic geologic surveys.
    • It has platforms capable of pulling out different types of fishing nets, collecting samples, and collecting water from various depths; it contains spaces for laboratories and storing fish.
    • Janan can conduct measurements of physical, chemical and biological parameters.
    • It is also capable of carrying equipment used to study the atmosphere, climate, air pollution and other environmental sensing devices

The research vessel Janan is used to execute environmental surveys and studies in but not limited to the following disciplines:

    • The Qatari and the Arabian Gulf waters which include the physical, chemical and geological aspects of the marine environment such as temperature, salinity, currents, dissolved oxygen, nutrients and organic matter
    • Biological and hydro-biological studies such as planktons, bottom fauna, marine fish, experimental fishing and fishery technologies
    • Marine pollutants and their impact on marine organisms, sediment and the sea floor
    • Training programs for postgraduates, technicians and research workers interested in marine studies and entrepreneurship opportunities for undergraduate students
