Qatar University is an internationally acclaimed university and takes its responsibility for the humane care of animals. The Policies and Procedures of Laboratory Animal Research Center (LARC) are written to standards based on the best practices in either of the following reference:
- QU-Handbook for Research Ethical Rules and Regulations
- Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) Policies, Regulations and Guidelines for Research Involving Laboratory Animals, 2013 (SCH Policies)
- The National Institutes of Health (NIH): Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, 8th edition (The Guide). American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.
It is our intention to implement a comprehensive animal care and use program with the ultimate aim of having Qatar University's animal care and use program accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC). This process provides continuing voluntary peer review of Qatar University’s program by internationally recognized experts. These Policy and Procedures designed to promote and sustain a safe and high-quality service in LARC that supports the University’s research mission to ensure the humane care and use of laboratory animals in accordance with MOPH requirements and the standards of Qatar University’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The Policy and Procedures have been developed to ensure the growth and success of a comprehensive and internationally recognized Animal Husbandry and Care program at Qatar University. Furthermore, Qatar University is committed providing its research community with a safe, clean and efficient LARC.
All personnel involved in animal research and animal care at Qatar University expected to become familiar with and follow the work Instructions set forth in the LARC's Policy and Procedures, the MOPH Policies and the Guide.
Failure to follow the Policy and Procedures may result in unsafe or unhealthy conditions for animals and/or personnel as well as the violation of Qatar University's and/or MOPH's regulations
