The Center for Sustainable Development at the College of Arts and Sciences, Qatar University (QU), organized the 5th International Sustainability Conference under the theme “Plastic Management and Future Trends." Held over two days on campus, the conference brought together a distinguished group of national and international academics, stakeholders, policymakers, industry practitioners, and government representatives for a comprehensive dialogue aimed at finding effective solutions to the global environmental, social, and economic challenges posed by plastic waste and plastic pollution.

The conference focused on three main themes: micro- and nano-plastics in marine and aquatic environments, sustainable plastic management and future trends, and rethinking plastics with an emphasis on bioplastics in a circular economy. The event highlighted the importance of knowledge exchange and international collaboration to develop innovative strategies that contribute to comprehensive, sustainable development.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Fatima Al-Khayat, Associate Dean for Sciences and Applied Sciences at QU, emphasized the conference's role as a leading platform for knowledge sharing and solution development. She stated, “The 5th International Sustainability Conference is a crucial platform for knowledge exchange, solution development, and planning for future action. Our collective vision will not only advance local progress but will also inspire global efforts to reduce plastic pollution. Today's conference unites key stakeholders, researchers, academics, and policymakers, and its outcomes will accelerate progress in plastic waste management. This event will enable Qatar to strengthen its strategies by aligning with global best practices, enhancing local research, and fostering international collaboration."

Dr. Sami Sayadi, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at QU, presented the Center's research initiatives, noting that all ongoing studies are focused on addressing global challenges regarding sustainable development and waste management.

Mr. Hatem Eldera, representing REDA Chemicals, Qatar, the conference sponsor, said, “Sustainability lies at the core of our business strategy, and we are committed to promoting responsible practices that benefit not only our business but also contribute to a healthier planet and a more inclusive society. Our sustainability strategy is based on four fundamental pillars: people, products, governance, and environmental stewardship."

The conference concluded with a comprehensive panel discussion in which speakers explored the potential for adopting innovative strategies to recycle plastic waste in sustainable and effective ways, focusing on global experiences that aim to enhance community engagement and integrate the public and private sectors into sustainability efforts. Proposed ideas included the replacement of traditional plastics with biodegradable bioplastics as a step toward a more sustainable future.
