Researchers from the Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI) at Qatar University (QU) have made significant contributions to the global scientific community through the publication of groundbreaking articles in prestigious scientific journals, garnering high impact factors. Prof. Kaltham Ali G. Al-Ghanim, Director of SESRI at QU, and Prof. Arokiasamy Perianayagam, Head of Urban Studies Desk at SESRI, have recently published impactful research in distinguished scientific journals.

Prof. Kaltham Al-Ghanim published the first article, titled “What scientists need to do to accelerate progress on the SDGs?”, with the independent team preparing the United Nations International Sustainable Development Report in Nature journal (impact factor 64.8). The article discusses the challenges associated with achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and emphasizes the need for improved governance processes to make progress. It highlights that SDG progress depends on various governance approaches. The article concludes by suggesting that scientists should develop criteria to evaluate the impact of different SDG governance processes and advocates for a shift from “accommodative” strategies to “transformative” ones. The article emphasizes the urgency of collective action by researchers, institutions, and funders to safeguard the SDGs, the planet, and human society.

Professor Arokiasamy Perianayagam, Head of Urban Studies Desk at SESRI, published the second article, titled “Global Effect of Modifiable Risk Factors on Cardiovascular Disease and Mortality,” along with the Global Cardiovascular Risk Consortium team. The article was published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), issued on 26 August 2023 with an impact factor of 176, which was ranked No. 1 among the medical journals.

Prof. Arokiasamy Perianayagam, in collaboration with the Global Cardiovascular Risk Consortium, presents groundbreaking research analyzing the impact of modifiable risk factors on cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. The study, based on harmonized individual-level data from 1,518,028 participants across 34 countries, highlights the global prevalence of these risk factors and their implications for public health. With regards to this success, Prof. Mariam Al-Maadeed, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, said, “These significant contributions demonstrate Qatar University's dedication to generating cutting-edge research and driving meaningful advancements in critical areas such as sustainable development and global health. Thus aiming to achieve a deeper degree of integration between research and realistic challenges.”

Prof. Kaltham Ali G Al-Ghanim stated, “The Socio-Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI), with all its members, seeks to achieve the highest levels of quality in producing research outputs of high accuracy and scientific value and seeks to publish in highly influential scientific journals with a great scientific reputation.”
