Qatar University represented by the Social and Economic Research institute, held the National Identity conference 2019. The importance of National Identity comes at a time when Qatari society is undergoing major transformations under the challenges of globalization, economic, and technological development. This is one of the challenges mentioned in Qatar National Vision 2030 on keeping pace with modernization and development while preserving social traditions.
The importance of this conference is to identify the components of national identity in Qatar, and recognizing its determinates, which will support decision-makers in drafting national policies related to identity, based on facts, in order to enhance the national identity of citizens, in a way that it can be measured and replicated in the future.
The outcomes of this conference are expected to contribute to the provision of information needed to design fact-based policies aimed at preserving national identity and ways to strengthen it.
Behind this great achievement, was a team made up of several members of the Institute, as well as a group of professors from Qatar University representing the Department of Social Sciences, the Department of Psychology, and the Department of Arabic for non-native speakers.
The project resulted in several analytical reports on topics related to national identity such as legislation, education, and Qatari dialect. The methodology of research methods related to the survey was adopted. Qualitative method was used in the design of the quantitative data collection tool. Therefore, the design of the national identity survey was initiated through the implementation of one focus group for males, and another for females, in order to design the national identity survey form.
The project at hand is the fruit of a serious of efforts by a diverse team of Qataris and the necessary expertise, to deliver the best work that achieves cultural harmony and ensures national unity.
