    Process of Academic Planning

    The University follows rigorous processes to review and approve new program proposals to ensure the offering of high-quality programs that meet the University and the country’s needs. New academic programs require the approval of the University Board of Regents upon the recommendation of the University President. To view the process per the type of proposal, click here

    The Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) formed a university-wide Academic Planning Taskforce (APTF) charged with the design, development, and implementation of the University Academic Planning process in accordance with the Academic Planning objectives and guiding principles. Membership of the APTF included representatives from all Colleges, the Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies, the Faculty Senate, the Research Sector, the Office of the VP for Research and Graduate Studies, the Office of the VP for Student Affairs, the Office of the Chief Strategy and Development, and the office of the VP for Academic Affairs.

    The APTF initiated work by conducting a comprehensive review of similar processes and approaches adopted by other universities, including a detailed study of the Program Prioritization process developed by Dr. Robert Dickeson for reviewing academic programs with the aim of increasing alignment with institutional strategies and priorities. Dr. Robert Dickeson’s approach was adopted by many universities, including the University of Southern Mississippi and Indiana State University, among others.

    The APTF identified three main components that are integral to the Academic Planning Process which outcomes should affect and inform the University Academic Plan.

    1. Market Research and Environmental Scan,

    2. Review of Existing Programs,

    3. Solicitation and review of ideas and proposals for new academic programs and initiatives.
