The Center for Sustainable Development (CSD) was established in the 2013-2014 academic year, under the College of Arts and Sciences, with the aim to conduct progressive and groundbreaking scientific research to address the core issue of sustainability in the State of Qatar. This is accomplished through dedicated research into topics such as algal technologies, food and water security, waste management, renewable energies, and natural resource management. The Center offers a platform to conduct high-quality research on priority issues, thereby advancing the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country. CSD is capable of hosting experimental development, improving R&D performance and promoting technology transfer in the aforementioned targeted fields. It has an expanding path of interaction with the private sector, as well.
The three last academic years (2018-2021) have been particularly active and rewarding years for CSD. The Center remains unique by demonstrating advanced scientific research in its three programs: Biotechnologies, Food-Energy-Water-Waste sustainability, and Human Sustainability exhibiting an increasing scientific publication rate and average impact factor, thereby contributing to the R&D excellence strategy of QU and offering many opportunities to attract funding by agencies such as QNRF. The center has also gained significant resources and funding from the public and private sector, currently having over 16 active projects. Please visit our Research Programs, Projects and Publications pages to learn more about our activities.
CSD is proud to be at the forefront of biotechnology applications. The development of innovative products, such as food and feed, biomolecules, generation of biofuels from renewable resources, CO2 capture, and waste bioremediation are just a few examples of the contribution of CSD activities to global sustainable development goals.
