Research Excellence Award

​The Qatar University Research Excellence Award aims to recognize and celebrate the outstanding researchers at Qatar University (QU) and their vital role in promoting sustained research and innovations that significantly impact society, industry, and related disciplines and meeting the vision and mission of the University.

The Award is granted for faculty members and researchers in the following three categories:

Category 1: Sciences and Engineering including, but not restricted to, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, marine sciences, environmental sciences, human nutrition, physics, mathematics, statistics and all branches of engineering.

Category 2: Humanities and Social Sciences including, but not restricted to, law, education, business and economics, Arabic language and literature, English, history, international affairs, mass communication, policy planning and development, psychology, sociology and social work.

Category 3: Medical, Biomedical and Health Sciences including, but not restricted to, medicine, pharmacy, biomedical sciences, sport sciences, public health and health sciences.

The awards shall be presented at the QU Annual Research Forum and Exhibition on February 19, 2025.

Eligibility

  • The nominee must be a faculty member/researcher who has been employed full-time at QU since January 1, 2020.
  • The research output of the nominee must have been performed under the highest standards and codes of integrity, transparency, and adherence to the highest principles of ethical conduct as per the code of Professional Conduct Policy for Faculty Members at QU.
  • The majority of research activities of the nominee must have been conducted at QU.
  • Previous winners who have received the award for the past 5 years (January 2020 – December 2024) are not eligible.
  • Unsuccessful nominees from previous years are eligible to re-apply in a subsequent year.

Selection Criteria

  • The award will be granted to faculty members and researchers whose research contributions are recognized as having a significant impact on the related field during the past 5 years (January 2020 – December 2024).
  • The research output of the nominee will be evaluated using a range of parameters and key indicators, which include but are not limited to:
    • Publication credentials expressed in the form of published articles in international and reputable peer-reviewed journals of high impact factor as a lead or senior author. Books/monographs and book chapters as the senior author are also considered. Any publications in predator journals will be disregarded. Submitted manuscripts or those under review and conference proceedings or abstracts will not be considered as credential publications.
    • Publications' impact and citations as expressed by the nominee's H-index or any other valid impact parameter.
    • Innovativeness and creativity in the form of industry, community, or society research products. It also includes all forms of generated intellectual property, such as patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
    • Contribution to undergraduate and graduate students' supervision and capacity-building programs such as postdoctoral training and researchers' exchange.
    • The extent of funding obtained as key principal investigator and collaborator.
    • Demonstrating a leading role in building research partnerships promoting the University's profile on regional and world levels.
    • Leadership positions on the editorial board of reputable journals. Memberships of journal editorial boards or societies are not considered.
    • Layman/public articles, talks, TV appearances, and radio talks that render publicity to QU and bring visibility to QU research.
    • Other relevant research activities and practices that merit consideration as significant contributions toward research excellence.

Nomination Process

To be considered for the award, individual faculty members and researchers must submit the following:

  • A cover letter from the applicant addressed to the VPRGS of Qatar University clearly listing salient research achievements from January 2020 to December 2024, along with a summary paragraph justifying their candidature for the award, as a PDF file and not exceeding 3 pages.
  • A PDF copy of updated CV with relevant information; salient achievement from January 2020 to December 2024 must be highlighted.
  • Form 1 filled and signed by the applicant and his direct manager (e.g. HoD, Associate Dean for Research, Dean/ Director).
  • Form 2 filled by the applicant, containing more details about the research activities, projects and achievements.

The nomination folder, along with attachments, must be sent electronically to vpr.excellenceaward@qu.edu.qa.

The extended deadline for submission is 15 January 2025.
