    Excellence in Teaching & Learning Cente

    Teaching Excellence is an integral part of the Core Curriculum Program’s (CCP) mission and deserves significant recognition. The purpose of this award is to recognize faculty members teaching Core Curriculum (CC) courses who demonstrate an exemplary implementation of QU Educational Excellence Themes, specifically in the context of General Education. More specifically, the award is for faculty members who succeed in creating a stimulating and engaging general education learning experience for undergraduate students in one of the CCP courses. Candidates shall explain their distinctiveness in developing students’ dispositions to life-long learning and promoting their critical and entrepreneurial thinking, problem solving, innovation, and leadership skills. 

    Eligibility Criteria

    To be eligible for the award, nominees must meet the following requirements:

    • The primary criteria for this award is excellence in teaching CCP courses.
    • Nominees must be full-time faculty members who have completed at least two academic years in teaching a Core Curriculum Program (CCP) course at Qatar University (QU).
    • Only faculty teaching the Core Curriculum Program courses can apply.
    • Nominees must be certified CCP Instructors (i.e. obtained Core Curriculum Certificate in Teaching and /or Digital Badge in General Education). Click here for more information.
    • Nominees must have obtained an above average score of 3.3 in the Student Course Questionnaire (SCQ) for the calendar year considered for the award.
    • Winners of QU awards for the last three years should not apply for the CCPETA award.

    Timeframe:

    The work considered for this award should be for Spring 2024 or Fall 2023.

    Award Winners

    One award will be made available each year. The Award Committee submits its recommendations to the CCP Director, who will then inform the awardee/s. One winner or co-winners per cycle will equally:

    • receive a financial reward of QAR 25,000.
    • be announced by the Dean of General Studies and receive the award during the CCP Annual Forum/ Event of the same academic year.
    • be invited to contribute to teaching and learning activities offered by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) within the CCP Certification Program.
    • be awarded a certificate and a recognition plaque and his/her name will be announced on the CCP website.

    • A nomination should be made by the applicant using the provided nomination form.
    • Nominees are requested to provide a one to two page narrative on the specific reasons why they should be considered for the award. The narrative should explain clearly how the nominee’s teaching distinguishes him/herself, specifically in the context of general education. It should also summarize their implementation of at least three educational excellence themes (Learner centric, digitally enriched, and entrepreneurial) and its impact on accomplishing the CCP objectives and learning outcomes.
    • Three letters of recommendation should be issued by the candidate's Department Head, students or colleagues who have observed candidate in the classroom and / or peer observation as part of Qatar University’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). The peer observation should be for the two semesters considered for the award.
    • The nomination form, nomination portfolio and all pertinent documents should be uploaded via the electronic form designed for this purpose for the current cycle.
    • An ad-hoc Award Committee comprising members from colleges will review the nominations for the award.
    • Award Committee will contact the winners.
    • Effective implementation of the philosophy of general education: which includes opening the minds of students to new ideas and ways of thinking; stimulating their intellectual curiosity; leading students to reflect on their learning; integrate knowledge and skills to address real-world and local issues.
    • Evidence of implementing three or more of the QU educational excellence themes in the course.
    • Evidence of instructor’s ability and continuous effort to create and implement an  engaging and challenging learning environment that support students’ success and progress.

    The CCPETA nominees must present the following components:

    1. An updated Curriculum Vita
    2. Teaching Philosophy Statement
      • The nominee must submit his/ her teaching philosophy that is aligned with the student-centered teaching approach.
      • The teaching philosophy is limited to a maximum of 1000 words.
    3. Course Portfolio

      The nominee must submit a customized course portfolio for the course/s considered for the award. The course portfolio must be for a course that has been taught in the year of the award submission. The course portfolio should include the following components:

      • Course syllabus.
      • Description of the teaching strategies, tools, and methods used by the faculty member to implement educational excellence themes.
      • Sample of teaching materials used that showcase the implementation of educational excellence themes (e.g. team-based learning, inquiry-based learning, role-playing, simulations, debates/ discussion). use of technology in the learning process (e.g. mobile applications., gaming … etc.). The description should be limited to one page..
      • Description of evaluation/ assessment methods used to promote educational excellence themes (summative/ formative) supported by samples of the evaluation instruments (projects, assignments, posters, media production, and exams).
      • A representative sample of student's achievements directly attributable to the nominee’s teaching effectiveness in implementing educational excellence themes.
      • The evidence provided such as presentations, activities and assessments should be original and developed by the instructor.
    4. Reflection Paper
      • The nominee should submit a (one to two page) reflection paper to demonstrate reflective and introspective analyses concerning his/ her work in the classroom.
      • Applicants should clearly state the impact of their teaching practices and the implementation of QU Educational Excellence Themes on enhancing students’ performance and learning experience.
    5. Classroom observation

      The nominee should demonstrate the effectiveness of his/her teaching by choosing one of the following:

    • Additional documents supporting an application may be submitted at the nominee's discretion.
    • Note that all documents must be submitted electronically. No paper documents will be accepted.
    • The committee may also request additional material if needed.
    • Submissions after the deadline will not be accepted.
