As part of its celebration of International French Language Day, Qatar University (QU) reaffirms its commitment to promoting linguistic diversity through its Minor in French program. This initiative aims to equip students with practical French language skills and a deeper understanding of Francophone cultures.
Launched in 2016, the program is an integral part of the university's strategy to foster a rich academic environment that enhances intercultural communication and prepares graduates with linguistic competencies suited to various fields such as diplomacy, international relations, and economic cooperation. The program is designed in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), ensuring a structured and globally recognized approach to language learning.
The curriculum includes courses covering different language proficiency levels, ranging from foundational skills to advanced competencies in communication, writing, and reading, with a strong emphasis on the cultural aspects of Francophone societies. Additionally, the program promotes academic collaboration with French cultural institutions. QU has previously organized joint events and study trips to France in partnership with the French Embassy and the French Institute.
Commenting on this occasion, Dr. Julieta Alós, Department Head of English Literature and Linguistics, which houses the French minor program, stated, “International French Language Day is a perfect opportunity to highlight the importance of linguistic diversity and its role in fostering mutual understanding between nations. At QU, we are committed to equipping our students with effective communication tools in multiple languages, broadening their academic and professional horizons."
Currently, the program is available exclusively for female students, with 54 students enrolled, including 42 Qatari students and 12 non-Qatari students.
The Minor in French program aligns with QU's strategic objectives, which focus on enhancing academic excellence, supporting scientific research, and developing academic programs that meet national development needs. By equipping graduates with high-level competitive skills both locally and internationally, the program reflects QU's dedication to fostering cultural dialogue and openness to global languages. This commitment reinforces QU's role as a leading educational institution that promotes knowledge and sustainable development.
