Welcome to the official website for the Department of Rehabilitation Science (DRS), College of Health Sciences, QU Health, Qatar University. Originally launched as the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences in 2018, the department was restructured and renamed as the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences in 2023. The department offers two programs, a
Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy (BSc. PT) and a
Bachelor of Science in Speech and Language Pathology (BSc. SLP), each developed in collaboration with local rehabilitation and health sector stakeholders, as well as international experts. Both programs are currently the first and only entry-to-practice physiotherapy and speech and language pathology programs in Qatar.
The introduction of these rehabilitation-related programs are aligned with Qatar’s National Health Strategy and international calls for rehabilitation from the World Health Organization (WHO, REHABILITATION 2030), and aims to address the growing needs of Qatar’s healthcare system and rehabilitation services. Due to advances in medicine and technology, people are living longer, but with an increased chance of developing chronic conditions and disability. With an ageing population, high prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and high prevalence of disability related to trauma, congenital and acquired conditions in Qatar, many individuals are experiencing limitations in functioning, reduced participation in society, and a significant decrease in quality of life. Rehabilitation, in a broad sense, involves a holistic approach, which incorporates actions and interventions by trained professionals to diagnose and manage the causes of functional limitations and participation restrictions among the population. The overall mission of the department is therefore to develop and provide quality rehabilitation sciences-related programs which will generate quality, knowledgeable, service-oriented, self-assured, adaptable, socially-sensitive and reflective physiotherapists and speech and language pathologists who aim to serve and rehabilitate the Qatar population to the best of their ability.
