The QU-Placer Math Test is a computer-based standardized test. The test is composed of two sections. Section 1 tests Elementary Algebra (MATH021) and section 2 tests Pre-Calculus (MATHP100) content. The test has a total of 70 questions. Specifically, the test asks questions of the following content objectives.
Section 1: Elementary Algebra (33 questions)
- Transform basic and simple statements into algebraic expressions.
- Perform all types of arithmetic operations on real numbers.
- Perform basic operations on polynomials, rational expressions, and radicals.
- Solve linear, quadratic, rational, and radical equations.
- Solve equations and inequalities involving absolute value.
- Demonstrate the use of graphing techniques for linear equations and inequalities.
Section 2: Pre-Calculus (33 questions)
- Recognize the basic functions and their graphs.
- Distinguish exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and their graphs.
- Solve trigonometric equations using trigonometric identities.
- Find exact values of trigonometric functions using double-angle & half-angle formulas.
- Solve equations involving exponential and logarithms.
The total time allowed for the test is 2 hours. The test is only available in English. The Center provides a calculator (Casio Fx-570ES Plus or similar model) for each student.

Scores placement information and exemption
Scores will be announced immediately on the screen to each candidate, but they will be uploaded to BANNER after being verified. A student can take the placement test only once per admission cycle. If a student wants to re-take the test and he/she is not registered on a Foundation Program math course, he/she can sit for the placement test the following semester. The test score ranges from
125-275 points. Students are placed into math courses according to the following criteria:
QU-Placer Math Scores | Placed in |
---|
235 - 275 | Calculus 1 (MATH101) |
200 - 234 | Pre-Calculus (MATHP100) |
125 - 199 | Elementary Algebra (MATH021) |
