The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has a strong research portfolio in the main disciplines of Civil and Environmental Engineering and benefits from good laboratories and a wide range of equipment. The research supports Qatar national vision 2030 and addresses the primary priory areas for the country which currently witnesses unprecedented development. The research is conducted by academic staff who are highly qualified and have a strong background and previous research experience. The department benefits from research funding available from Qatar University, the industry, and through various funding schemes by Qatar National Research Funds (QNRF). Our academic staff collaborates with top researchers from all over the world on topics of high priority and multi-disciplinary areas.

Structural Engineering
The research in structural engineering covers: Static and dynamic analysis, structural optimization, structural rehabilitation, strengthening, and repair, analysis and design of concrete and steel structures, nano cementitious/composite materials, composite self-healing concrete, earthquake engineering, structural dynamics, railway engineering, structural health monitoring, human-structure interaction, finite element analysis, and advanced composite materials.
Geotechnical Engineering
The research in geotechnical engineering covers: soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and geo-environmental engineering.
Water and Environmental Engineering
The research in water and environmental engineering covers different topics such as desalination, water treatment, wastewater reclamation and reuse, fate and transport of contaminants in subsurface systems, multiphase flow through porous media, multiscale modeling of environmental processes, and solid waste recycling and management.
Construction Engineering and Management
The research in construction engineering and management covers: productivity measurement and improvement, data collection and analysis, statistical quality control and management in the construction industry, occupational health and safety, OHS Management, risk assessment, and project performance. In addition, it includes digital construction, BIM, VR, and Unmanned Air Vehicles applications in construction engineering including reality capturing techniques.
Transportation and Pavement Engineering
The research in this field covers studies of transportation and pavement engineering with a focus on pavement materials and design, Superpave technology, and traffic engineering. The department is in strong collaboration with the Transportation and Traffic Safety Center and benefits from the support of a number of its members who are jointly affiliated with the department.
