Explored potential research opportunities
The Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies hosted the Research Collaboration Symposium 2017 on November 27-29
The event aimed to discuss and explore the research potential at QU and the opportunities offered by the University to achieve the projects of governmental and private institutions.
Attending the first session were QU President Dr Hassan Al Derham, QU VP for Research and Graduate Studies Prof Mariam Al-Maadeed, QU College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Dean Dr Rashid Al-Kuwari, QU College of Business and Economics (CBE) Dean Dr Khalid Shams M A Al-Abdulqader, QU College of Law (LAWC) Dean Dr Mohamed Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi, QU College of Sharia and Islamic Studies Dean Dr Yousuf Al-Siddiqi, and QU Social and Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI) Director Dr Hassan Al Sayed, as well as QU officials, faculty and staff.
The event’s program featured presentations and panel discussions focused on four main themes: energy and environment, information and communications technology (ICT), biomedical and health sciences, and social sciences, arts and humanities.
The first day included two sessions titled “QU colleges research capabilities” and “Vital sectors research priorities and challenges”, and a panel discussion on “Possible collaborations with QU” moderated by QU College of Health Sciences (CHS) Head of Public Health Department Dr Hanan AbdulRahim.
Keynote speaker was Dr Mohamed Yousef Al Mulla, CEO of Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO).
Also on the program were presentations delivered by speakers from the Ministry of Economy and Commerce, Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Doha International Family Institute, Qatar Development Bank, and Qatar Museums. Discussions focused on a wide range of topics such as “Priorities in Economic Sector”, “Priorities in Family Sector”, “Priorities in Entrepreneurship and SME”, “Priorities in Museums Sector”, and “Priorities in Education Sector”.
The second day featured many presentations delivered by speakers from QU. They discussed issues related to “QU Health as a New Initiative to Advance Research”, “QU Health: Research and Graduate Studies Strategy”, “Research and Services at BRC”, “LARC: Services and Future Development”, “Genetic testing for diabetes risk in the Arab world”, “Cancer programs at QU: what can we do more for the country and the people”, “Therapeutic Target for Cancer”, and “Circulating microparticles as biomarkers of cardiovascular disease: Lessons from Hamad General Hospital Stroke Registry”.
The third day included presentations delivered by speakers from QU. They presented on “Water Research at Qatar University”, “Clean Energy and Energy Efficiency”, “Recent Advances and Frontiers in Qatar’s Marine Resources through Research”, “Why Advanced Materials?”, “Advances in Cyber Security Research”, “Advances in Smart Grid Research”, and “Advances in ICT Research for Health Applications”.
Keynote speaker was H.E. Sheikh Dr Faleh Al Thani, Assistant Undersecretary of Agricultural Affairs, Livestock and Fisheries at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.
In his remarks, Dr Hassan Al Derham said: “Since its inception, QU is committed to tackling issues that are of the interest of the community. QU always strives to incorporate innovation and research within the educational process. In this context, the organization established research centers and programs that contribute to providing applicable learning and to developing the students’ skills and abilities while enabling researchers to meet socio-economic needs.”
He added: “Additionally, the University established a state-of-the-art Research Complex, which includes specialized research centers and contemporary research equipment. It has also accomplished, in record time, significant achievements through the implementation of a research roadmap listing four priority research areas -- Energy, Environment and Resource Sustainability; Social Change and Identity; Population, Health and Wellness; and Information, Communication and Technologies (ICT).”
