The Qatar University (QU) Alumni Association—Psychology Chapter marked its third anniversary, celebrating under the theme “And in Yourselves" in an event aimed at promoting psychological and social awareness across various community segments, from children to prominent figures. This event reflects the association's goals of presenting psychology in innovative ways, fostering individual self-awareness, and enhancing personal capacities to create a positive impact on society.
The event was held in collaboration with key partners, including the Ministry of Municipality, Friends of the Environment Center, Nutree Health and Wellness Center, Kiddy Zone, and Cordoba International Kindergarten. Together, they created an interactive learning environment that encouraged attendees to explore self-development and unlock their potential. The program included a theatrical presentation showcasing true stories of overcoming mental health challenges, along with dedicated spaces like the “Prison of Thought," “Healthy Routine," and “Planting Corners" that illustrated the connections between mental health and various aspects of life.
The event featured a range of speakers and a panel discussion with experts from academia, media, sports, mental health, and pharmacology, as well as specialized workshops. These included art therapy for professionals, calligraphy, and workshops on the mental benefits of gardening. Additionally, training sessions for children were conducted in collaboration with QU's Toastmasters chapter to enhance public speaking and leadership skills, making the event a comprehensive family-friendly experience.
In her opening remarks, Ms. Roaa El-Otify, Chairperson of the Psychology Chapter of the QU Alumni Association, emphasized the significance of the occasion, stating, “Our chapter aims to unite QU's psychology graduates under one roof, working towards social impact through mental health education and awareness. Each year on our anniversary, we organize an event that highlights psychology's relevance to society. This year, under the theme 'And in Yourselves,' we stress the importance of each individual as an active element who needs to engage in self-reflection and self-development to bring about a positive impact. Through our various stations and workshops, we aim to provide attendees with a unique opportunity to explore themselves and benefit from the experiences of prominent and successful personalities in the community on applying the concept of 'And in Yourselves' in their lives."
Mr. Kamal Naji Mohammed, a member of the Psychology Chapter, expressed his joy in participating, saying, “I am delighted to contribute to this event through a station that revives past memories by displaying vintage items, which transport us back to the days of our youth and childhood, bringing happiness amidst today's challenges. I named my station 'Memories of Yesterday, Happiness for the Soul,' and I hope it resonates with everyone and brings back beautiful memories."
Additionally, Ms. Narmeen Nader, a psychology specialist and member of the Psychology Chapter, introduced the “Prison of Thought" station, saying, “When we think of a prison, we think of restrictions; sometimes these are mental barriers that limit us in different life situations. At this station, we strive to help visitors understand the reasons behind their tense or exaggerated reactions to certain situations by addressing cognitive distortions and guiding them towards a positive liberation."
Ms. Aseel Taha, an active member of QU's Alumni Psychology Chapter and event organizer, shared insights on the planting station, stating, “We aim to enhance the connection to nature through planting and nurturing plants, encouraging a sensory experience that includes touching the soil and inhaling natural scents. This process helps people immerse themselves in nature, enhancing focus and reducing stress, making planting a powerful tool for self-awareness and reflection."
Ms. Reham Al-Moghari, a psychological specialist and member of the Psychology Chapter, underscored the importance of a healthy routine, saying, “The impact of a healthy routine extends from physical to mental aspects, affecting various facets of life. Our goal is to highlight the value of starting the day with spiritual and healthy practices, such as prayer, exercise, and proper nutrition, as well as fostering social connections to build a balanced personality capable of handling life's challenges."
Mr. Moysar Hamad Al-Naili, representing the Nutree Health and Wellness Center, proudly expressed his support for the Healthy Routine station, stating, “We advocate for psychological and physical wellness that transcends merely being disease-free to encompass overall quality of life. We offer advice and guidance to support individuals' mental and physical health, aligning with the motto, 'A Sound Mind in a Sound Body.'“
Ms. Ahood Al-Yafei, a distinguished member of the Psychology Chapter, contributed a dedicated station to support children through various activities, emphasizing, “Today, we are presenting a special station aimed at providing psychological support to children. Activities include storytelling with educational values, intellectual games like LEGO, and educational stations on planting and recycling, to highlight the mental health benefits of plants. Additionally, we've included a public speaking workshop that helps children express themselves confidently. We believe that this comprehensive experience allows children to discover their capabilities and develop their personalities in an interactive and enjoyable setting."
This event served as a holistic platform, linking psychological, environmental, cultural, and scientific awareness to underscore the importance of mental and environmental health. It encouraged participants to reflect inwardly and work towards personal and professional development. The initiative also provided a diverse and inspiring educational experience for all attendees, focusing on deepening understanding of mental health challenges and strategies for overcoming them.
