Under the guidance of Qatar University (QU), high school students Essa Al-Kubaisi and Abdulla Al-Abdulla from Qatar Science and Technology Secondary School for Boys (QSTSS) clinched first place in the National Competition for Scientific Research. The competition was organized by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MOEHE) in collaboration with the Qatar Research, Development, and Innovation (QRDI) Council.
Their winning project focused on developing a silver nanoparticle-infused pharmaceutical hydrogel to treat skin infections and foot ulcers, an innovative approach to addressing medical challenges. The research was a part of the High School Research Experience Program (HSREP). This program, supported by QU and funded by Qatar National Research (QNRF), provides young students with hands-on experience in advanced research and valuable learning experience.
Mentored by Prof. Alaaldin M. Alkilany and master's student Arshiya Husaini from QU's College of Pharmacy and by Mr. Suleman Miah from QSTSS, Essa and Abdulla's success highlights the value of early engagement in research. “Equipping high school students with research skills at an early stage prepares them to excel in science and make meaningful contributions to society," said Prof. . Alkilany.
This year's competition was highly competitive, featuring 808 research projects from 1,559 students. The triumph of the QU-mentored team highlights the university's pivotal role in inspiring future innovators to tackle global challenges through advanced research and mentorship.
