Qatar University Young Scientists Center (QUYSC) launched the 4th cycle of the December Al-Adaam Initiative. The December Al-Adaam Initiative is a national scientific initiative launched by the Center annually throughout December, with each year bearing a different theme and slogan that reflects the most important scientific research and studies at Qatar University (QU). This year, the initiative highlighted scientific research related to the latest technologies to serve the environment and maintain the environmental sustainability of the State of Qatar. These distinctive research and advanced projects were presented through a set of short films that were published on all social networking sites to ensure reaching the largest range of community members.
The Center’s team prepared for the initiative by coordinating with colleges, departments, and research centers at QU to submit their research proposals to be shown in the initiative’s films. The Center was also keen to involve QU students from various colleges and research centers to present their scientific research. Students participated from various colleges and centers, namely, the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering, the QUYSC, the Biomedical Sciences Center, the Environmental Sciences Center, and the Agricultural Research Station.
In addition, the Center aims to diversify the topics offered to include innovative research on several topics related to environmental problems. Regarding the initiative's films, they covered important topics revolving around the latest methods and technological applications and their role in protecting and developing the Qatari environment. The most prominent focuses of these topics were developing solar cells using artificial intelligence, inventing advanced air purification devices, and monitoring marine waste based on the use of technology. Moreover, other research on the latest technologies for monitoring vibrational energy and biodiversity in the State of Qatar was presented, as well as technological monitoring of the composting process and vertical farming technology. The participating students expressed their interaction and admiration for the initiative.
On this Occasion, Shahad Al-Abdullah, a student at the College of Engineering and one of the participant students in the initiative, said, “The initiative is a valuable opportunity for us as students to present the projects that we participated in implementing and disseminating them to the community. It contributes effectively to enhancing scientific awareness and encouraging students to participate in research, which enhances the development of the youth’s intellectual skills and abilities.
Professor Noora Jabor Al-Thani, Director of the QUYSC, said, “Technology plays a vital role in protecting and preserving the environment by providing sustainable and effective technological solutions to various environmental problems. Therefore, in this year’s initiative, we were keen to provide the most prominent of these solutions that are provided by QU to serve environmental sustainability. We aim every year to involve QU students from various disciplines in this initiative to highlight the role of QU in developing and advancing scientific research and studies in a manner consistent with achieving the goals and objectives of the university and supporting the research priorities of the State of Qatar as well as the Qatar National Vision 2030.”
