The Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies in Qatar University (QU) organized a press conference to announce details on the QU Summer Research Internship 2019. The QU Summer Research Internship is a training program for undergraduate and graduate students that provides training in research methods and techniques. The faculty and staff of centers mentor students to contribute to a number of research activities and projects.

The event was attended by Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies Prof. Mariam Al-Ali Al-Maadeed, Director of Research and Planning Dr Aiman Erbad, Director of QU’s Biomedical Research Center Dr Asma Ali J Althani, Director of the Center for Advanced Materials Dr Nasser Abdullah Alnuaimi, Director of Laboratory Animal Research Center Dr Hamda Al-Naemi, Director of the Social & Economic Survey Research Institute (SESRI) Dr Hassan Al-Sayed, Director of the Environmental Science Center (ESC) Prof. Hamad Al-Kuwari, Section Head of Central Laboratories Dr Mohammed H. Alsafran, as well as a number of officials in the research studies and postgraduate sector.
In a statement Prof. Mariam Al-Maadeed praised the QU Summer Research Internship saying, “This summer program is a way for us to develop research training for QU students, which can help empower them and allow them to learn from research cadres in various fields. Qatar University boasts world-class research centers with high-quality competencies, which have provided distinctive contributions to the local community and produces academic output with global influence.”
In his role as coordinator of the program, Dr Aiman Erbad said, “The best way to provide students with skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork and effective communication, is to work hard within research and operational teams in research centers, that are in line with the research priorities of the state. These skills are important to hone the character of the student and ensure that they are prepared for research challenges in the work environment.”
Dr Hassan Al-Sayed pointed out the importance of summer training for students of Qatar University, which allows students during the two weeks of training to experience research in its authentic environment. The student engages with researchers in discussing research abstracts, how to collect and analyze data, review reports, design presentations and much more.
Dr Asma Ali J Althani said, “The Biomedical Research Center (BRC) at Qatar University provides regular educational programs in the field of education and training to serve students and the community at large. The center has prepared this summer training program to enhance students’ scientific and practical skills in the field of scientific research in medical sciences. Applicants for the BRC program will find a specialized research team consisting of assistants, technicians and researchers with a high level of training and using latest scientific devices and techniques. During the two weeks the trainee will go through intensive training which covers various issues such as safety in the laboratory and using basic equipment in medical research laboratories. Registration will take place in the Biomedical Research Center section of the Qatar University website and end on April 30. The best six candidates from the applicants will be selected to be enrolled in the program, which will start on June 10 and end on June 23, 2019. Trainees will be given attendance certificates following the completion of the course. The Biomedical Research Center is planning further advanced training programs in specialized medical professions, which will be announced at a later date.”
