Qatar University's Foundation Program (QUFP), in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MOEHE), successfully launched the Al-Qabas Program 2023 on 6 and 7 November. The program, themed “For a Successful University Experience,” marked its sixth consecutive year, attracting 357 students from 39 schools across Qatar, providing students with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with university life and the required skills to pursue the scientific, engineering, and medical disciplines of their choice.
The primary goal of the Al-Qabas Program is to equip tenth and eleventh-grade students with vital learning skills, empowering them to excel in subjects like English, mathematics, and strategic exam techniques. This initiative plays a pivotal role in nurturing their potential for pursuing scientific, engineering, and medical disciplines. This, in turn, strengthens their capabilities to successfully enroll in STEM and health majors at Qatar University.
Over the course of two intensive days, 357 students actively participated in various stimulating sessions designed to mirror the university environment and bolster their competencies in English, Math, and critical thinking. The program encompassed activities like the “Braniac” challenge and “Design a Useful Mobile App,” fostering an atmosphere conducive to learning and innovation.
Notably, the program emphasized test-taking strategies for standardized exams, including IELTS, ACT, SAT, and QU's placement tests. Sessions conducted in collaboration with QU's Testing Center provided invaluable insights into the prerequisites for successful enrollment in STEM and health colleges.
Feedback from educators and students alike underscored the program's immense value. An academic advisor from Simaisma Secondary School for Boys praised the sessions for their comprehensive coverage of standardized test strategies, English language proficiency, and critical thinking skills, expressing optimism about the impact on students' success in these exams. He stated, “As I attended the program with students from my school, I found the program to be excellent and beneficial for the students. The segments that covered standardized tests, strategies for their implementation, and the review of examples of SAT and ACT math test questions were very helpful. Similarly, the English language tests (IELTS and TOEFL), along with training students in critical thinking and creative thinking skills, were extremely useful. The program is excellent and beneficial for students, and we hope that the students have gained valuable experiences from the Al-Qabas Program, translating them into success stories in achieving high scores in standardized tests.”
Student feedback from an anonymous survey revealed a high level of satisfaction, with many expressing gratitude for the program's guidance in navigating university requirements and exams. Several students lauded the program's role in clarifying uncertainties and fostering enthusiasm for joining QU. One of the students said, “The program was beneficial on a personal level, with useful activities and wonderful ideas. I suggest increasing the number of sessions.” Another student stated, “Al-Qabas provided a rich experience for students; it answered many questions that students had about universities and exams. It included a comprehensive explanation regarding the university requirements that aid in planning for university life.” Moreover, another student wrote, “I have always been so confused and lost about how to get accepted, but this program was of huge help. I sincerely appreciate it. Thank you for your hard work. I am looking forward to being at Qatar University.”
The resounding success of the Al-Qabas Program 2023 is evidenced not only by the participation but also by the tangible impact observed in the students' newfound confidence and knowledge enhancement. The program has been instrumental in shaping their aspirations towards achieving excellence in standardized tests and successfully transitioning into university life.
