    Case Study

The case study unit aims to be a high-impact platform that advocates and advances experiential learning through publishing local and regional teaching case studies and integrating them into the curriculum. It will support the development of innovative course modules which will enable students to develop a deeper understanding of business knowledge. The unit will also provide students and alumni with cases, reports, and practitioner material that are grounded in a real-world context and tailored to the local business environment.

    Objectives

    • Embedding case-based learning in the curriculum of College of Business and Economics
    • Promoting the use of cases as a learning tool at Qatar University.
    • Publishing teaching case studies
    • Providing regional-based case studies on the MENA region.
    • Training faculty members to learn the art of case writing.
    • Developing students’ entrepreneurial skills and knowledge.
    • Developing students’ analytical skills with case studies.

    Main tasks

The case study unit will help CBE faculty members by providing them with local and regional cases based on recent events. As a learning tool, case studies are perceived to lead to effective and active student engagement in classrooms. Further, case studies could also be made use of when CBE faculty members would like to apply innovative teaching methodologies. A major advantage of using case studies in classrooms is that they enable teachers to achieve higher levels of Bloom's taxonomy of cognitive learning. This benefit is more pronounced when advancing from surface learning that focuses on memorization (recall of knowledge) to deeper learning (such as analysis of policies, evaluation of firms, and creation of new ideas), which is very important to develop the mindset of entrepreneurs.

In addition to the previous roles, the unit also performs the following activities:

    • Supporting students in case solving competitions and training them in case analysis to develop their case solving skills.
    • Encouraging CBE faculty to publish local and regional business case studies in all business fields in local, regional and international publication outlets.
    • Offering workshops to faculty members and training them on the effective use of case studies in the classroom.

Hosting conferences to present cases and discuss entrepreneurial issues in the region.
