The Research Supervisor is requested to nominate the most qualified External Examiner that can objectively assess the scientific contribution of the student’s thesis. The External Examiner is expected and supposed to provide an independent and objective opinion about the quality of the thesis.
These are the criteria to be considered in proposing an external examiner:
- The academic affiliation of the External Examiner has to be outside Qatar University.
- The External Examiner should have an established reputation in the area of the dissertation research and he/she has solid and significant contributions to the field of research of the thesis.
- The External Examiner must have experience with the supervision and examination of doctoral students.
- He/She cannot be a current or recent (last five years) collaborator (i.e., co-supervisor, co-author, co-grant holder) either of the student, or of any member of the student's supervisory committee.
- The External Examiner has not worked for the academic unit of any member of the student's supervisory committee and the student's previous academic unit.
- He/She cannot be a former supervisor for the Student, Supervisor or Co-Supervisor.
- He/She cannot be a former student for the Supervisor or Co-Supervisor.
- He/She has not studied (during the Master and/or Doctoral studies) at the same academic unit from where the Supervisor or Co-Supervisor have completed their graduate degrees.
- He/She cannot be a family member or close-friend of the student and/or any member of the student’s supervisory committee.
- He/She cannot be a recent past (in the last 2 years) external examiner in the candidate's graduate program, or for a student with the same supervisor.
