Graduate Faculty are full-time QU faculty members who have demonstrated the ability to teach graduate students and/or supervise thesis/dissertation research.

Graduate Faculty consists of two classifications:

    1. Graduate Faculty to teach graduate level course and
    2. Graduate Faculty with Supervisory (or Co-Supervisory) Status, which designates faculty who are eligible to teach graduate level courses as well as supervise (co-supervise) thesis/dissertation research.

To be eligible for Graduate Faculty Status (for teaching graduate level courses) a faculty member must meet the following criteria:

    • Hold a terminal degree appropriate to the discipline

    • Maintain a significant record of scholarly output

To be eligible for Graduate Faculty with Supervisory Status, a faculty member must meet the following criteria:

    • Satisfy the criteria for Graduate Faculty status

    • Have a record of successful thesis and/or dissertation supervision

Faculty members not meeting the criteria for Graduate Faculty with Supervisory Status may apply for Co-Supervisory Status where the major supervisor satisfies the Supervisory Status clause.

Full-time faculty members on Co-Supervisory Status may apply for Graduate Faculty with Supervisory Status upon successful completion of the supervision of a single master’s thesis or doctoral dissertation.

Nominations or terminations for Graduate Faculty Status must be endorsed by an academic unit Head/Chair, College Dean, and Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies.

The membership term for Graduate Faculty Status is 3 years. A term may be renewed based on the request of the academic units.

Academic units may nominate scholars serving at Research Centers within the University who meet the eligibility criteria and have a joint faculty appointment with the unit for renewable term membership of 3 years. Such scholars may serve on Thesis and Dissertation committees as the major Supervisor.

Academic units may nominate scholars serving at Research Centers outside of the University or at other institutions who satisfy the eligibility criteria for Graduate Faculty Status and have a joint faculty appointment with the unit for renewable term membership of 3 years. Such faculty members may serve on Thesis and Dissertation committees as Co-Supervisors.

    Status Termination

A member of the Graduate Faculty may resign from holding the status by submitting a letter of resignation to the Department Head, which must be endorsed by the College Dean and forwarded to the Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies.

Graduate Faculty status is terminated automatically for a faculty member who is no longer affiliated with Qatar University unless an academic unit requests a continuation for a specified period of time.

Term membership is terminated automatically for a scholar outside the academic units whose joint faculty appointment is rescinded.

Faculty members failing to maintain the eligibility criteria may not be renewed for Graduate Faculty status.
