    Undergraduate Program

Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biomedical Sciences

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biomedical Sciences at the College of Health Sciences (CHS), Qatar University (QU) was the first program outside the US to receive NAACLS accreditation which occurred in April 2008.  The program aims to prepare competent medical laboratory technologists.  Therefore, academic policies and procedures were established to ensure that the program graduates have the required competencies to successfully pass the professional certification examinations such as the ASCP, and qualify them for employment.

This program at Qatar University is a 4-years BSc program delivered by the Biomedical Sciences Department (BMS) at the College of Health Sciences (CHS).  The curriculum is structured as a 2+2 model, in which the students complete 33 credit hours of core courses plus the compulsory major supporting requirements during the first two years.  The subsequent two years involve the BMS major requirements.  The last semester of 20 weeks includes 5 separate clinical practice courses, during which, the students rotate through the various lab sections at the hospitals associated to Hamad Medical Corporation.

Upon the program completion, the graduates become are eligible to take the Board of Certification of the American Society of Clinical Pathology Examination (ASCP).   Issuing of the BSc degree is not contingent upon the students passing any type of external certification or licensure examination.  However, passing the certification exam is a great adding value for the quality of graduates and a very important component for various accreditation aspects.
