    Graduate Certificate in Environmental Sciences


    PROGRAM OVERVIEW

    The Graduate Certificate in Environmental Science is dedicated to provide advanced environmental science skills for professionals and researchers who are committed to the development of a sustainable future of Qatar. Being a one-year program at the graduate level, this will make the certificate well designed to upgrade and develop knowledge and research skills that can be employed at the Ministry of municipality and Environment, environmental sciences agencies, research centres and labs in Qatar and overseas. The program’s mission and educational objectives are aligned with those of the B.Sc. and M.Sc. Environmental Science programs as well as the need of relevant stakeholders.

    OBJECTIVES

    The curriculum emphasizes advanced principles of environmental science in areas such as ecosystem structure and functions, environmental chemistry and in applied environmental topics including pollution, conservation, marine ecology, and global climate change. Objectives of the Certificate in Environmental Science includes but not restricted to:

    • Develop students’ understanding about ecosystem concepts, structure and function and the relevant technical and research culture.
    • Develop students’ foundation skills necessary to comprehend, evaluate and argue environmental issues, problems, and solutions.
    • Develop students’ communication skills, in diverse settings and communities, on broad-spectrum range of environmental issues.

    POGRAMS’ LEARNING OUTCOMES

    • Apply analytical skills to choose solutions to environmental concerns of relevant industries in the region using interdisciplinary approaches.
    • Demonstrate communication skills about environmental issues and solutions

    OPPORTUNITIES

    The graduate certificate in environmental Science open excellent opportunities for graduate in both the public and the private sectors related to environment. These include professional services in administration, research, and development. The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) is among the potential employers of the certificate holders. Teaching and research institutions are potential workplaces as well. Environmental department and laboratories in other governmental and industrial sectors are also potential work places for such graduates. Certificate graduates with high GPA enhance their eligibility and competitiveness to pursuing an academic career path by applying to M.Sc. Environmental Science Program.

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

    Eligible applicants should meet the following requirements:

    1. Completed a Bachelor degree in Science, Engineering, Agriculture or any other related field from a local university or college accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education or from an internationally accredited university or college
    2. Meet one of the below English proficiency requirements: 
    • Earned a previous degree from an institution of higher education in a Program where English was the language of instruction.
    • Achieved a minimum score of 520 on the paper based TOEFL (CBT = 190 or iBT = 68) taken within 2 years of the start of the intended semester of admission.
    • Achieved a minimum score of 5.5 on ILETS test taken within 2 years of the start of the intended semester of admission

    3. Show satisfactory performance in the personal interview with the admission committee.

    REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

    All applicants to the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Science are required to submit the following documents to the Admissions Department:

    1. Online Admissions Application
    2. Final and official university transcripts
    3. Official TOEFL score report or equivalent score report
    4. Curriculum Vitae
    5. One-page personal statement
    6. Health Certificate issued inside Qatar (International students please refer to International Students Website)
    7. Photocopy of the applicant's Qatar ID card (non-Qatari applicants must also provide a copy of their passport; international students please refer to International Students Website)
    8. Two recent identical passport size photographs (size 4 x 6 cm) with white background
    9. Two recommendation letters
    10. Permit from the applicant’s work agency (if the applicant is a worker)

    DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

    A minimum of 13 credit hours are required to complete the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Science:

    • A minimum of 7 credit hours of core requirements courses.
    • A minimum of 6 credit hours of elective courses.
