    Are there any programs within the Department of Social Sciences that are offered in English?


    All of the three programs, namely sociology, social work, and psychology are offered only in Arabic instruction. While there are a few courses (such as English I and English II) that are taught in English, the remainder of the courses is taught in Arabic.

     

    Can I minor in any of the three programs, psychology, sociology, and social work?


    A student can major in all three programs but can only minor in the psychology and sociology program. At the present time, a student is unable to minor in the Social Work program.

     

    How long does it take to complete a degree in any of the three programs in the Department of Social Sciences?


    The Bachelor"s Degree program for Psychology, Sociology, and Social Work require the completion of 120 credit hours. This can be completed in four semesters if a student registers for 15 credit hours per semester. However, the pace of completion for each student also is flexible based on their personal circumstances and hence can be lengthened if need be.

     

    Do you offer internships in your programs?


    The Social Work Program is at present the only program that offers a field practicum course for its students and there are a number of various social work agencies that have partnered with the Social Work Program. Some of these social services agencies include Al Shafallah, Hamad Hospital, the Qatar Foundation Family Consultation Centre, Qatar Foundation for Social Protection (which includes Qatar Foundation for Child and Women Protec- tion), Qatar Foundation for combatting human trafficking, and numerous schools from various grades.

    The Psychology and Sociology Programs work closely with other Qatar Foundation agencies and such partner- ships may provide additional opportunities for students to pursue work internships.

     

    What is offered as the final graduation project?


    ​The Capstone graduation project is one of the major requirements for those students studying in the Sociology and Psychology Program. This graduation project is supervised by the course instructor and the students are provided ongoing supervision and review of the research projects. There are tremendous opportunities for those students from any of the three programs to present their research projects in international conferences such as the annual National Conference of Undergraduate Research in the U.S.A. and other conferences in the Middle East. Qatar University encourages research initiatives from its students and provides students the chance to showcase their research in international research conferences. In the past two years, there were a number of students whose abstracts and research projects were accepted for presentation in international conferences. Subsequently, Qatar University provided funding for these successful students in order that they present their research projects in the conference.

     

    Do I have to declare a major when I register?
    A student has to complete 12 credit hours of the core curriculum program of any of the three programs prior to declaring their major.

     

    Are any of the programs in the Department of Social Sciences open for male students?
    The Psychology and Sociology Program are only open for female students. However, the Social Work Program accepts both male and female students.
