Department of Arabic Language
The Department of Arabic Language trains specialists in spoken and written Arabic, providing students with essential expert knowledge and experience in Arabic linguistics, literature, and criticism. The department currently offers a BA in Arabic Language.
Department of Biological & Environmental Sciences
The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences (DBES) offers undergraduate and graduate programs leading to B.Sc. in Biological science, B.Sc. in Environmental Science, M.Sc. in environmental science and PhD in Biological & Environmental Sciences. Additionally the department offers a graduate certificate in environmental Science. These programs were designed to prepare students to work independently and with a high level of technical skills and scientific insights by showing innovations and creativity. Both B.Sc. and M.Sc. in environmental science degrees are accredited by Institution of Environmental Science (IES/CHES-UK). Graduates from our programs are expected to provide leadership in research and training in academic, governmental, and industrial sectors of State of Qatar, and they are expected to contribute toward the implementation and objectives of Qatar National Vision and international scientific community.
Department of Chemistry & Earth Sciences
The “Department of Chemistry and Earth Sciences” currently consists of two programs, Chemistry and Geology. The BSc degree program in Chemistry is accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC). The undergraduate program offers courses in different fields of chemistry (analytical, physical, organic, inorganic, and biochemistry). In addition, our department offers courses to various programs in Qatar University including Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Dentistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, Health Sciences, Human Nutrition, Medicine and Pharmacy. The students in the department are engaged in different research projects with faculty members via granted projects awarded externally (e.g., Qatar Foundation) and internally (Qatar University). Moreover, student chapter in the Department of Chemistry and Earth Sciences, Qatar University American Chemical Society (QUACS) is an international student chapter recognized in December 2015, in accordance with the bylaws of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The department has been collaborating with both national and international communities such as the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC, UK), the American Chemical Society (ACS, USA), International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO), United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in numerous aspects.
Department of English Literature and Linguistics
The Department equips students with the linguistic and cognitive skills necessary to use English efficiently and creatively in various contexts, as well as with general analytical and critical thinking skills. It offers a BA in English Language & Literature.
Department of Humanities
The Department of Humanities offers three major programs: History, Applied Geography and Geographic Information System, and Fine Arts, as well as a minor in Philosophy. These programs provide an educational and research environment in line with Qatar vision 2030 and prepares students to enter a variety of professions. The program’s plans offer preliminary and specialized courses in an educational framework aimed at establishing critical analysis skills, knowledge communication in writing and orally, qualifying students to continue their higher studies, and opening up new horizons in the labor market related to their academic disciplines.
Department of International Affairs
The Department of International Affairs has been offering degree programs since its inception in 2006. The department houses a group of dedicated faculty, students, fellows, and staff whose mission is to advance the study of International Affairs and Policy, Planning, and Development in order to realize Qatar’s strategic vision and priorities. The Department of International Affairs is one of the fastest growing and exciting places to study and prepare for a career in public service with both domestic and international governmental and non-governmental organizations. The department offers two undergraduate degree programs with an interdisciplinary approach to the study of government, politics, and public policy. Our extensive range of courses incorporates theory and practice to develop students with the analytic and practical skills that prepare them to meet the demands of today’s competitive job market or to fulfill their goal to pursue further studies at the master and doctoral levels.
Department of Mass Communication
The Mass Communication program in the College of Arts & Sciences at Qatar University provides students with a high-level instruction and a well-rounded understanding of the modern uses of communication for all media cadres. The program offers three areas of specialization: Print & Online Journalism, Broadcast/ Online Journalism and Strategic Communication, and allows the students to graduate with a BA in Mass Communication.
Department of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics
The Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics offers three undergraduate programs which include BSc in Mathematics, BSc in Statistics and BSc in Physics. It also offers two graduate programs, namely, MSc in Applied Statistics and MSc in Materials Science and Technology. All the programs are applications oriented with focus on producing graduates with analytical and logical capabilities that should enable them to contribute in the country’s transition towards a knowledge-based economy.
Department of Social Sciences
The Department of Social Sciences offers three programs: Sociology, Social Work, and Psychology. The language of instruction in the three programs is Arabic. It offers a degree of BA in Social Sciences. The Sociology program focuses on enhancing students' abilities in research methods while engaging them in the educational process through the application of knowledge on the ground in line with the needs of the labor market. The program offers several courses that help build innovative knowledge about sociology and the main challenges of contemporary societies. The program provides theoretical courses and various tools to enable students to explain social phenomena in a scientific way. It also provides methodological courses (quantitative and qualitative) to analyze data using new research methods. The Social Work program focuses on an academic and professional approach that supports social change and development, social inclusion, and empowerment. The program prepares students to be able to work in various areas of social work such as medical, school, family, addiction ... etc. by providing theoretical and applied courses offered by a distinguished elite of academics in contemporary methods that comply with the essence of specialization, international standards and the culture of Qatari society. In applied courses, students are provided with professional skills and behaviors under academic and institutional supervision. The Psychology Program at Qatar University is an academic program aiming for excellence in teaching and research with professors who are dedicated to providing the highest quality of education possible to students. The program offers courses in psychology as the science of mind, brain, and behavior using a contemporary, comprehensive, and culturally rooted integrative approach in understanding the human being in its richness, diversity, and complexity. The program is also oriented toward engaging students in basic and applied psychological knowledge and skills along with interdisciplinary activities to become well equipped to pursue different careers in psychology.
