Minor and Concentration
The ME program will offer two options:
- Minor in Railway Engineering.
- Concentration in Aerospace Engineering.
Both the Minor and the concentration will be offered for the 1st time in Fall 2022.
Minor in Railway Engineering
Background
- Railway engineering requires graduates with versatile skills who can become engineers with technical, managerial, and teamwork skills to work in various railway engineering positions in Qatar and the region and understand the requirements placed by the railway engineering industry on its professional staff.
- The new Minor targeted the College of Engineering undergraduate students interested in the railway engineering industry, with a mix of discipline-specific and multi-disciplinary course requirements.
- The Minor provides students with the basic skills and background necessary to rapidly be on track to become effective specialists and leaders in the railway engineering industry.
- The enrolled students will learn technical, logistics, management, and communications skills to meet the demands of the rail railway engineering career.
Who is it for?
The minor is open to students of the following programs:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Industrial and System Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Mechatronics Engineering
Program Degree Requirement
The proposed minor will accept two sections (one male and one female) in the Fall semester of each academic year. The entry requirements will be as follows:
- Completing a minimum of 60 CHs in Mechanical engineering, Industrial and System engineering, Civil engineering, Computer engineering, Electrical engineering, and Mechatronics engineering ensures that the students have the required engineering background to undertake the minor.
- A GPA of at least 2.5 ensures that the students can handle the additional load of the minor.
- A satisfactory performance in the personal interview.
Program Graduation Requirement
Mechanical Engineering students with a Minor in Railway Engineering need to complete an additional 18 CHs to be awarded the Minor thus accumulating a minimum of 149 CHs. The students must complete 18 credit hours, of which 12 credit hours of minor requirement courses and 6 credit hours of minor elective courses apart from their major requirement courses:
Students must complete the following courses from the minor requirement courses:
- MECH 411 Railway Management & Operations
- CVEN 463 Railway Track Engineering
- MECH 412 Railway Instrumentation and Control
- MECH 413 Railway Signalling
Students may choose any two courses from the minor elective courses:
- MECH 414 Railway Noise and Vibration
- IENG 411 Maintenance Planning and Control
- IENG 486 Service Operation Management
Course ID | Course Title | Package Name |
MECH 411 | Railway Management & Operations | Minor Requirement Courses |

Concentration in Aerospace Engineering
Background
Who is it for?
The concentration is open only to fulltime undergraduate students admitted to the mechanical engineering program.
Program Degree Requirement
Any students admitted to the ME program can join the concentration.
Program Graduation Requirement
The students enrolling in this proposed concentration are required to take the same engineering courses offered in the mechanical engineering program and the total number of credit hours is the same as for the ME program (131 CH). However, the students taking this concentration must take concentration-related major electives and concentration-related senior design I and II courses. These courses are:
- Aerodynamics
- Aircraft Design
- Flight Dynamics and Controls
- Senior Design I (related to the concentration)
- Senior Design II (related to the concentration)
The senior design I and II courses for this proposed concentration will be aerospace engineering-related topics.
The Table below shows the study plan for the proposed concentration in Aerospace Engineering, where the five courses of the concentration package are highlighted in yellow. In addition, students are required to enrol in the summer practical training course MECH 399 (3 CH) just before their last year. This is preferably with an aerospace related potential employer.
