Welcome to DAUP, the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning at Qatar University, in the State of Qatar.

‘… the important determinant of any culture is after all the spirit of place’ (L. Durell, Spirit of Place, London 1969, p. 156)

Architecture is not only related to buildings but represents the identity of people and civilizations’ (I. Jaidah, M. Bourennane, The history of Qatari Architecture (1800-1950), Milan 2009, p. 11)

Architectural education is an increasingly complex endeavor, with the development of knowledge and the building of skills aimed at global and local conditions in a state of constant flux. With architecture holding professional status in many international jurisdictions there is tremendous pressure to ensure that graduates are duly equipped with robust capabilities to solve daunting problems. Added to the mix are escalating challenges such as climate change, eroding resources, heightened urbanization, and a call for demonstrable sustainability. The Department of Architecture and Urban Planning (DAUP) vision is rooted in the pursuit of professional competency given very distinct settings and circumstances. DAUP education acknowledges + celebrates culture and identity as a foundational influence on the preparation of future architects, while concurrently addressing the vital need of graduates to be open-minded, creative, and innovative. The curriculum in our department demonstrates rigor, demands distinction, and meets high standards locally and internationally.Education is a fundamental element of society. At DAUP we focus on the quality of the student experience, coupling technical skill building with the broader development of knowledge and values. Students work under the direction of leading academics as they learn to design buildings, neighborhoods, and cities that are healthy, culturally rich, environmentally responsible, and liveable.Located with the College of Engineering, the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning works in collaboration and complement with allied disciplines and professions. DAUP teaching also builds on the unique character and quality of the design fields, understanding that pedagogy, process, and products in Architecture and Urban Planning are distinctive. The great designer Walter Gropius (1883-1969) once noted that “Architecture begins where engineering ends”.DAUP stands as a leading provider of education and research for the disciplines of Architecture and Urban Planning in the State of Qatar and the Middle East, deeply respecting the diversity of climate, landscape, population, historical background, identity, and culture, as vital to a rich, healthy and meaningful way of life. The Department cooperates internationally with high-profile schools, professors, and practitioners from Architecture and Urban Planning, ensuring our education and research are competitive, relevant, and respected. The visionary designer Buckminster Fuller stressed that “The best way to predict the future is to design it.”We welcome you to study in our department. Let us design the future of the built environment together!
