Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineering is a very wide engineering discipline that covers not only the traditional chemical, petroleum, and gas activities, but also extends to biochemical engineering, environmental engineering, material engineering and consumer products engineering.

The focus of the Chemical Engineering program at the Qatar University is to prepare entry level Chemical Engineers to the national Gas, Petroleum and Petrochemical industries of the State of Qatar.

Chemical Engineers serve in quite different fields: development, design, supervision, production, sales, etc. In development, chemical engineers participate in the development of new technologies and new products. In design, a safe and cost-effective process design is the main objective. In supervision, chemical engineers supervise and control the design and construction of new plants, or the modification and operation of existing installations. In sales, chemical engineers, with their technical background, act as interfaces between consumers and the organization they represent.

In the State of Qatar, tremendous opportunities are available for chemical engineers. With the existence of large gas reserves, oil production, refining, gas treatment, petrochemical, desalination and fertilizers industries, chemical engineering graduates find immense possibilities to choose very promising and interesting careers at both technical and managerial levels.

The Department of Chemical Engineering at Qatar University offers a four year program leading to the bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. In addition to the University and Engineering Faculty requirements of 62 credit hours, 69 additional credit hours in chemical engineering courses are required which results in an overall total of 131 credit hours.

The curriculum exposes the student to laboratory experience and computations in Chemical Engineering. A final year project and summer industrial training are required, The program is designed to develop basic knowledge in: Material and Energy balance, Thermodynamics, Fluid mechanics, Heat and Mass transfer, Control, Reaction engineering and Plant design. In addition, there are several elective courses in gas processing, environment, petroleum engineering, and polymer engineering that students can study to broaden their knowledge.

The Chemical Engineering Program is proud to be accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission; EAC of ABET, http://www.abet.org. Accreditation is a form of endorsement that the program offers a valid education that is officially recognized internationally. The hard work of our faculty members and collaborations with local industrial partners and stakeholders were the key drivers to this achievement.
